“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high,
because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and
kindness–trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never]” (AMPC Psalm 91:14).
Psalm 91–a treasure for the ages! There is so much to this beautiful psalm, but it is on my heart to focus on the second part of verse 14, which is God’s response to the psalmist. I get an impression of God reaching out His hand, inviting all of us, His beloved ones, to know Him, to have a deeper relationship with Him. We will spend eternity getting to know Him, but we can go in now to His Secret Place and know Him more. We do this by getting into His Word and praying, which is a conversation we have with God through His Holy Spirit.
Consider Abraham, Moses, and Joshua. Oh how they desired to know Him more!
Abraham was willing to leave everything behind to pursue God. He trusted God and took Him at His Word, and allowed God to lead him into the unknown. Abraham obediently followed
God to the point of being willing to sacrifice his own son, the very promise he had been waiting for and finally received after many years. He trusted God to provide and make a way. How could Abraham have that kind of trust, that kind of courage and faith? Because he knew God would not lie. He knew God would not abandon him. He knew God was real. God always came through mightily for him. Abraham could trust God because he had personal experience with God. Our Loving Father and loving Savior through the Holy Spirit are inviting us to have this personal knowledge through personal experience with Him too.
Moses also knew God and sought to know Him more and more. He would go to the “tabernacle of meeting” and pursue God (Exodus 33:7). He knew getting the promise without God’s Presence was not worth getting (Exodus 33:15). Moses knew that knowing God was far better than any earthly reward. He knew God was faithful. Moses was able to live in God’s faithfulness, being an eyewitness to God’s lovingkindness time and time again.
Joshua, his assistant and future leader of the Israelites, was happy to stay in the tabernacle getting to know God so he would have the strength to receive the promise (Exodus 33:11). Joshua had a pivotal example in his leader, Moses. Moses was able to pray, “...if I have found grace in Your sight, show me Your way, that I may know You…” (Exodus 33:13). Moses would have let go of the Promised Land to stay in God’s Presence. He longed to know God more. Moses and Joshua could trust God because they knew God. They knew Him because they spent time with Him. Oh to know Him more.
Are you stirred up, my sisters, to pursue this knowledge of our Father, our Savior, our dearest Friend even more? As we pursue Him, He will show us what is next, what to do. He will comfort us in His Love. He will give us great joy in His Presence as we take a break in the midst of hectic schedules. He is not afraid of chaos or busyness. In fact, He can step right into it and part the sea if we let Him. I know it is not always easy to get away with God, but it is worth it. As we bring this desire to Him of getting away with Him, He will help us find ways to do just that. Oh how He will gently lead us and lovingly hold us. We will have the faith and courage of Abraham, Moses, and Joshua to know our God will not forsake us–He will set us on high in Him, in His Secret Place. We will have the strength to walk on the water, to take leaps of faith, knowing He is with us, He is in us, He is for us! We can trust God because we can know Him.
This is a confession I wrote in my notebook a couple of months ago after being inspired by
Cindy McKinney’s book and Sarah Van Dreese’s beautiful message on the Bride of Christ (see
the links below; you’re going to want to check these out for sure):
The desire and request of my heart, oh to know You—Father God and Lord Jesus Christ—to know You better, to know You more, to know You deeper than ever before. To know You until You become more real to me than anything else. Oh to know You by the power of Your Holy Spirit and through the Blood You shed, Lord Jesus.
